Enhanced understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms might lead to improved drugs, with reduced potential for side-eff ects compared with today’s uricosurics. Even more exciting is the idea that responding to the defects of these transporter proteins might have further benefi cial eff ects, because they could also transport other molecules besides urate. Some studies have suggested that the association between metabolic syndrome and gout is not only caused by diet and personal behaviour. If this association holds true, we might have a better understanding of some of the most relevant medical problems of our time.

Perioperative beta blockers in patients having non-cardiac surgery: a meta-analysis.
BACKGROUND American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) guidelines on perioperative assessment recommend perioperative beta blockers for non-cardiac surgery, although results of some clinical trials seem not to support this recommendation. We aimed to critically review the evidence to assess the use of perioperative beta blockers in patients having non-cardiac surgery...
متن کاملß-Blockers reduce mortality in patients undergoing high-risk non-cardiac surgery.
BACKGROUND ß-Adrenergic receptor antagonists (beta-blockers) are frequently used with the aim of reducing perioperative myocardial ischemia and infarction. However, randomized clinical trials specifically designed to evaluate the effects of beta-blockers on mortality in patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery have yielded conflicting results. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the effect o...

The effect of beta-blockers on perioperative mortality in Background: non-cardiac surgery has been controversial due to concerns regarding the scientific integrity of the DECREASE-I and DECREASE-IV trials. Previous meta-analyses indicated beta-blockade might increase mortality after removing the DECREASE trials from the evidence base. In this report, we statistically investigate the DECREASE tr...
